Founded in 1692 by Father Eusebio Kino, the mission was completed only in 1797. With Indonesian bricks and calcareous mortar, Tohono O'odham built a refined building with a white dome, in Mexican, Moorish and Byzantine style. San Xavier del Bac, the oldest still active Catholic church in the US, was called the American Sistine Chapel.
